ICAR – The International Coalition for Agunah Rights

A coalition of 27 organizations working to promote solutions to the problem of agunot and mesoravot get (women whose husbands are unable or unwilling to grant them a Jewish divorce), in accordance with Halacha (Jewish Law) and to ultimately eliminate the problem. ICAR unites social-welfare, women’s, human rights, and social justice organizations, as well as academic centers, serving as an umbrella organization for groups with differing and varied religious approaches.

International Agunah Day - 20 March 2008

Taanit Esther is International Agunah Day (13 Adar Bet) - among the event that took place this year are the following:

* A Protest March on 19/3/2008 from the Rabbinical Courts in Jerusalem to the Knesset with the slogan: "Marriage should not be a Life Sentence";

* A booklet was published in Hebrew "Solutions in Halacha to Get recalcitrance - sources to learn together" including a suggested lesson plan. For the content of the booklet click here or contact ICAR offices for a copy;

* A nationwide Study Day took place on the subject of "Solutions in Halacha to Get recalcitrance" in tens of places throughout Israel;

*On 18 March a special session of the Committee for the Advancement of Women in the Knesset took place on the subject "The Competition to Acquire Jurisdiction in Divorce Proceedings in Israel and the Resulting Harm to Women";

*We printed a special stamp commemorating the day;

*Environmentally friendly tote bags with the slogan "Marriage is not a Life Sentence" were made by people with disabilities in a factory in Southern Israel and can be purchased at COMME-IL-FAUTstores;
